Start chives outside in early spring, they will germinate in around 14 days. If you want to plant indoors, start 6-8 weeks before your seasonal last frost date. Once the seedlings appear, thin the chives to 6 to 8 inches apart. Select a sunny location and sow seeds. When harvesting, clip with scissors.
Trim back the flowers as they will readily reseed once they bloom. The flower buds are also edible.
Cut down as needed, a couple of inches from the ground. Harvest 3-m4 times the first year and then once monthly to help reduce productivity. You can store chives by freezing them in a container. Be sure to use when fresh or frozen, as dried chives will lose flavor. Contains Calcium, Iron, Vitamins A, B1, B2, Niacin.
