Start with a light, moist soil, ideally with a PH level of 6.5 to 7. Sow the seeds ½ an inch deep, with 3 inches between plants and12 to 18 inches between rows. Beets will need plenty of moisture while germinating, so keep the soil moist for up to the first 3 weeks. These beets can thrive in conditions with full sun or partial shade and are heat and cold tolerant. After 5 to 7 weeks, the beets should be 2 to 3 inches, and ready for harvesting. Also known as beetroot or blood turnip, these Red Detroit Beets are uniform in shape and flavor. They are known to grow in chilly Spring weather and are mostly problem and pest free. Sometimes aphids or flea beetles may be present. These beets are perfect for canning but may also be enjoyed bottled or pickled! Cut up, blanche, and freeze in freezer bags for easy storage! Pick leaves before any sign of wilt for tasty greens! Red Detroit Beets are a rich source of Iron, Calcium, and Vitamins: A, B1, B2, C, and Niacin!
